The history of the Oberammergau Passionplay is connected with the Thirty Years War indivisibly. Then, the plague spread. And when it started carrying off citizens of Oberammergau, people vowed in 1633 to perform passionplays every ten years so that all the suffering would stop fastly.

According to tradition, from this time on there were no more victims of the plague. In 1634 the people of Oberammergau started honoring their promise. Since then, they performed “their Play”.
